The underground passage is actually a lake that Erik uses to get to and from his home then up to the opera house,he first brought Christine down here through the mirror in the Prima Donna's room.The lake branches off into many parts of the catacombs,with garish carvings on the walls and candles that almost seem alive.Erik is no fool,he has set up many traps to warn him of people approaching.
