Life for in St. Louis is never dull. With the legalization of vampires comes many new challenges. Like the fact that the leeches now have rights, which means you can't out right kill them now. For any legal executioners this could become a problem.
For one executioner, life is even more a mess. Anita Blake is one of the top Animators in the country, and is also knows as "The Executioner" among the entire vampire community. And as of late is the Human servant of Jean-Claude, Master of the City of St. Louis. She is the center of a lot of unwanted attention, especially from the Vampire Council.
When some unannounced visitors enter St. Louis, things begin to get real strange. Low-level vamps awake in daylight hours, Masters unable to control their own hunger and strange fires arising all over. So what will come to pass, will Anita and the rest of her guys be able to keep their territory or will the lose everything?
