.xMasquerade..... Paper Faces on Paradex.
History:
Raoul was throughout his childhood spoiled by his older siblings. Despite that he didn’t become too selfish although it wouldn’t be right to say that it didn’t affect him at all. When their father died Philippe became the head of the family and he made sure that Raoul had a good education.
Raoul first met Christine while they were still just kids. He was on a walk with his governess when they came upon a violinist and his young daughter. The boy was at once smitten by her so when the wind caught hold of her scarf Raoul, despite the governess’ protests, jumped into the ocean to retrieve the scarf for the girl. After that Christine and Raoul became friends. Eventually he realised that the feelings he had for her was that of a blossoming love. However, he was too shy to tell her.
Raoul did his best to forget her for he assumed they would never meet again, and even if they did the class difference would prevent them from marrying. During the years between their first encounter and their reunion at the opera house Raoul spent his time working in the crew of a training ship called Borda.
When Raoul became a patron of the Opera Populaire he was both surprised and pleased to find Christine there. He decided that this time he would take a chance. To his delight he learned that his feelings were returned. Only there was someone standing in their way: The phantom, whom Christine seemed to be drawn to. For some time Raoul was confused about his place in her life, but she reassured him that although it didn’t always seem like it her heart was with him.
In the time following he tried at every chance he got to capture the ghost, whom he thought held Christine against her will. He didn’t understand the connection between the other two and that both scared and angered him.
After Christine told him the full story he offered to take her away, to take her to a place where he couldn’t find her. He wanted to leave right away but went along with Christine’s wish of staying for one more performance. It was around this time they decided to get engaged - or rather, pretend to be. But to him it was real enough for he had convinced himself that in time it would be the real thing.
Christine convinced Raoul that they should keep their engagement a secret, but despite their best attempts Philippe (not to mention Erik!) still found out about it. The two brothers got into many an argument over it, and Raoul himself knew that a marriage between a noble man and a mere actress would be looked down upon the society, but in matters of the heart he couldn’t resign himself to norms and conventions. His feelings for Mlle Daaé were too great.
Along with the managers Raoul planned to lure the phantom out of his hiding place by putting on his Don Juan Triumphant and then capture him. But nothing went according to plan; the phantom killed Piangi and kidnapped Christine. He also caused the great chandelier to fall and hurt several of the audience members. During the following confusion Raoul was approached by Mme Giry, whom led him down to the cellars of the opera, down to the phantom’s lair.
He faced traps along the way but eventually Raoul made his way to the underground lair, where he found both Christine and the Phantom. A dramatic scene commenced between the three, it’s climax being Christine having to chose whom she loved and wanted to be with. The Phantom had been the one threatening to kill the vicomte, but it was the young soprano who did it. For, as Raoul to his horror realised, Christine chose to stay behind with him - to stay with the monster. Despite, or perhaps because, of this the Phantom let Raoul go.
In the following years he travelled out in the world many times searching for Christine, but each time he came home empty-handed.
When he was first approached with the idea of helping to rebuild the opera house and become it’s manager he strongly opposed it, not wanting to show the world what a wreck he had become, but after a while he realised that maybe by going along with it he might have a chance to meet Christine again (and win her back). At the very least he hoped it could help get his mind of certain things.
To satisfy the public he does make the occasional appearance the opera house, but he hates every minute of it so he rarely goes there unless he is needed.

Personality:
"Say you love him and my life is over." Those were Raoul's exact words that day, and that's how he's been feeling ever since. Losing her left him as a mere shadow of his former self. He often cried over his lost love and though Philippe and their sisters tried to help him out of it nothing seemed to help.
Then came the letter... After hearing that Christine was coming back to Paris some of his hope has been restored.

The grin on his face was still quite broad (but fading somewhat) when the girl finally turned to look at him. "It's me." But sensing that she apparently had no idea what he was talking about he added: "My name is Raoul de Chagny – but perhaps you know me better as the boy whom rescued your scarf from the sea." He laughed a little at the last part. He often thought about that day and it never failed to bring a smile to his face. Realizing that maybe Christine didn’t think about their time together as often as he did (or perhaps she had even forgotten it altogether) he blushed slightly.
“Excusez-moi, Chris - Eh, mademoiselle…” he whispered, shaking his head. He had never expected that seeing his childhood sweetheart again would be so awkward. “I…” he began, trying to think of something to say to make the situation, hopefully, a little better. “I saw you at the gala performance. You were amazing.” The moment after he had said this it occured to him that it may not have been a good idea at all act so familiar with someone just because he saw them at a preformance. Oh, if only she would remember him!
